Mrs. Minako Yamamoto Shimosato, 69, of 225 Gould Street in Iowa City, died from complications of lung cancer in her home on April 8, 2003 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Shimosato chose to be cremated. The family will greet friends Saturday from 4 – 7 pm at the family home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or a fund to be established for Childrens Cancer Research. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Minako was born August 15, 1933 in Oitaken, Japan, the daughter of Isamu & Haruno Yamamoto. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Meiji-Gakuin University in Tokyo. Minako came to the USA on September 24, 1958 to teach Japanese to Professor & Mrs. Robert J. Lifton at Harvard University. She married Dr. Shiro Shimosato on September 12, 1959 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Minako was an avid bird lover and also worked in children’s day care in Iowa City.

She is survived by her husband of Iowa City, three daughters, Keiko Shimosato Carreiro of San Francisco, California, Elliko Shimosato-Shutt and Yukiko Hill, both of Iowa City;
four grandchildren, Alitza Haruko Shutt, Isabelle Yumiko Shutt, Terra Coral Hill and Julian Kenji Carreiro; three sisters, Yoko Imamura of Kobe, Noriko Miwa of Naguya and Ruriko Hamaua of Tokyo.

Minako was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.
