Loretta Margaret Kantor, 101, of Iowa City died peacefully Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Mercy Hospital.
Funeral Mass will celebrated at 2 pm, Monday, June 21, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will at St. Josephs Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed the Lakota Indian Nursing Program in Aberdeen, SD or for masses at the Franciscan Missions.
Loretta was born June 9, 1909 in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and “Lottie” Charlotte Miller Rummelhart. She was a graduate of Hazelton High School and received her bachelor’s in art and English from the University of Iowa. Following graduation Loretta worked in the UI Business Office, and during World War II she was employed with the Air Service Command in Oklahoma City. Loretta was united in marriage to Arthur J. Kantor from Jersey City, NJ on October 22, 1945 at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City.
Arthur was employed by the Veterans Administration. They lived in Washington DC, Ft. Wayne, IN, Huntington, WV, and Wilmington, DL, before returning to Iowa City where Loretta was employed in the catalog department at the University of Iowa Libraries.
Loretta was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and had volunteered since 1973 at VAMC.
Loretta is survived by two children, Joseph Kantor of Iowa City and Mary (Tom) Dougherty of Knoxville, TN; her sister Gertrude Miller of Iowa City; numerous nieces and nephews. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband and six siblings Edith Brysch, Kathryn Keeley, Matilda Shrader, Leo Rummelhart, George Rummelhart and John Rummelhart Sr.
