Thomas James “Pickle” Herring age 49 of Oxford, Iowa died following a heart attack on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s in Iowa City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin, Iowa. Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Iowa. Visitation will be at the church in Tiffin on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. Memorials are for the benefit of his daughter’s Alex’s college education fund. Thomas J. Herring was born on September 17, 1953 in Fort Madison, Iowa the son of John and Rose Sandbothe Herring. He attended Fort Madison Schools and Burlington Community College. Tom worked as a correction officer for the State of Iowa at the Fort Madison Penitenary and for the last nine years at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center Oakdale Campus in Coralville. In March of this year he started his twenty forth year as a correction officer. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin where he served in varies capacities, including past chairman of the administrative board. He was involved with youth groups and child care at the church and with sporting activities within the community. At one time he served as president of the ASCME local union. His family and friends will remember his kind and genuine nature, his love for animals especially his dog Tatum. In his job and with kids he went by the book, if you stepped out of line he would let you know. Tom had a wonderful sense of humor; he never met a stranger and loved to talk with anyone. Tom loved and cherished his daughter Alex who was the love of his life.

His family includes his wife Michelle and daughter Alexandria of Oxford, Sisters: Winifred Sanford of Fort Madison, Carlene and husband Clifford Shafer of Rome, Iowa, Francis Lee Winegar of La Masa, California, Sister in-law Nicolle and husband Shawn Hornberg and children Tanner, Curtlyn and Sandrock of Boone, Iowa, brother in-law Brad Burgett of Newton, Iowa, nephew Bill and wife Barb Shafer of Rudd, Iowa and his companion and friend Tatum his golden retriever. Tom’s family would like to thank his friends Steve and Gina Henkelman of Oxford

His parents and nephew Robert Grafer preceded him in death. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation service are caring for Tom’s services and his family.
