Iowa City Press Citizen, April 17, 1950. MARY E. SHAY DIES TODAY. Rites for Resident Of North Liberty, 83, Will Be Wednesday. North Liberty - Mrs. Mary E. Shay, 83, widow of Free Shay and resident of this community for the last 13 years, died at 3 a.m. today in Mercy hospital at Iowa City after an illness of several months. Mrs. Shay was born in Iowa City, May 10, 1866, the daughter of William and Wilhelmina Clausen Ernst. When she was a small child she moved with her parents to a farm in Graham Township. She was married in 1905 to Mr. Shay, of Graham township and the couple established a home in that area. Retiring from farming in 1937, they moved from Graham township to North Liberty. Mr. Shay preceded her in death in 1942. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. D. S. Wolfe, North Liberty, and Mrs. Edward Teslik, Swisher; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oathout funeral chapel in Iowa City with the Rev. A. C. Proehl, pastor of the Iowa City Zion Lutheran church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
