Iowa City Press Citizen, December 24, 1954. CHARLES SHAY, 83, SUCCUMBS. Retired Plumbing Contractor Dies; Set Rites Monday. Charles Shay, 83, retired Iowa City plumbing contractor, died at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mercy hospital after a lingering illness. He was a resident of Iowa City for more than 60 years, making his home recently at 604 East Davenport street. Mr. Shay was born on a farm near Tama on March 31, 1871. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Anna Schlenk, of Washington D.C., two brothers, (Joseph) Ed Shea, of Iowa City, and James Shay, of Larned, Kansas. He is also survived by a niece, Mary Shay, who had made her home in Iowa City with Mr. Shay. Other survivers include nieces and nephews. Mr. Shay was preceded in death by seven brothers and a sister. Funeral services are scheduled Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hohenschuh mortuary with burial in Oakland cemetery. The Rev. Edward Neuzil, of St. Wenceslaus Catholic church, will officiate.
