Iowa City Press Citizen, Monday, August 31, 1942. DEATH TAKES FREE SHAY, 74. Funeral Services Will Be Held Wednesday Afternoon. North Liberty - Mr. Free Shay, 74, died at 5:30 o'clock this morning following a lingering illness. He was born March 25, 1868, in Johnson County, son of the late John and Louisa Forwald Shay. He lived in North Liberty the last six years, residing previously on a farm northeast of Iowa City. He was married to Miss Mary Ernst, July 6, 1905, at the home of her parents. Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Donald Wolfe, of west of North Liberty and Mrs. Ed Teslik, of near Riverside; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Ed, Ben, and Charles Shay, all of Iowa City, and Jim Shay, of Larned, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Schlenk, of Iowa City. One sister and five brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at the Beckman funeral home in Iowa City at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. A. C. Proehl of the Zion Lutheran church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
