Iowa City Daily Press, November 2, 1906. John Shay died at 3:30 yesterday afternoon at his home, 1122 N Dodge street. He had been ill about four weeks. Creeping paralysis was his affliction. He was 74 years of age. A wife, nine sons and a daughter survive - John, Will, Dennis, James of Larned, Kansas; Humphrey, Charles, Benjamin and Ed, of this city and Miss Anna of this city. A sister and brother in Carroll, Iowa, also survive him. The funeral will take place from St. Mary's church at 3:30 Sunday afternoon and the interment will be in St. Joseph cemetery. Mr. Shay had lived here 31 years and was known far and wide among pioneers.
