Mary E. Quinn, 84, of 400 S. Dubuque Street in Iowa City, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 23, 2003, at her brother’s home in Iowa City. She was beloved by all who knew her.

Mary chose to be cremated. The family will greet friends Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 PM. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend James Vrba officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Patrick Church.

Mary was born April 12, 1918 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of John C. & Blanche O’Neill Quinn. She graduated from Corpus Christi High School in Ft. Dodge. In 1939, Mary received her nursing degree from St. Joseph’s Nursing Academy in Ft. Dodge, Iowa.

Mary entered the US Army Nurse Corps during WWII, during which time she served as a surgical nurse while stationed overseas in Europe. She was proud of her involvement in the Battle of the Bulge with General Patton’s army and the liberation of Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. After her service in the Army, she returned to the United States and worked as a registered nurse for the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, retiring in 1978.
Mary was a devoted parishioner of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was involved in many community services. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends and loving family.

Mary is survived by two brothers, Jim Quinn & his wife Betty of Iowa City; their children, Susan Quinn, Julie (Quinn) Maas & her husband Paul, Lisa Quinn, Michael Quinn and Stephen Quinn & his wife Pam; her brother Donald “Corky” Quinn & his wife Arlene of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, their children,
John Quinn & his wife Holly, Mary Anne (Quinn) Van Rossen & her husband Arne, Thomas Quinn, Sara Quinn, Greg Gilley and his wife Lisa and Tim Gilley and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert, and a sister, Veronica Quinn.
