John J. Kessler, 86, of rural West Branch, died Monday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, after a short illness.
Mass will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church at Nolan Settlement in Solon, with burial at the church cemetery. The Rev. Sebastian Menke will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Brosh Funeral Home in Solon, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.
Mr. Kessler was born March 19, 1901, in Johnson County, son of Frank W. and Mary Maher Kessler. He married Cecelia Moravek Feb. 18, 1925, near Solon. He farmed in the Johnson and Cedar County area most of his life.
He was a member of St. Bridgett's Catholic Church.
He is survived by three sons, Eugene of West Branch, Clarence of Cedar Rapids and Melvin of Solon; two daughters, Dorothy Linnell and Darlene Klouda, both of Solon; Three brothers, Les of Tipton, Joe and Mike, both of Solon; one sister Bridgett Irving of Iowa City; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1976, two brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren also died earlier.
