Christina “Chris” Byers, age 88 of West Branch died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Crestview Care Center in West Branch following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be after 12 noon on Tuesday until services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Chris’s memory to the Mercy Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for Chris’s family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com.

Christina Mary Elizabeth Bulechek Byers was born April 4, 1914, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City the daughter of Antone and Frances (Reha) Bulechek. She married Vernon Byers February 21, 1939, in Iowa City. For many years, the couple farmed northeast of West Liberty. In 1983 they moved into West Branch. For those that knew Chris you knew her love of the farm, her chickens, the garden, flowers, and the life she and Vernon had there.

Her family includes her husband, Vernon; sisters, Alma and her husband, Clair Brown of Solon, and Delores and her husband, George Parsons of Iowa City; brother, Louis Bulechek of Rock Island, IL; brothers-in-law, Cleo Byers of Los Alamos, NM, and Leland Byers of McAllen, TX; sisters-in-law, Thelma Smith of Fairfax, VA, Darlene Nevins of Warner, NH, Carol Slach of West Branch, Anna Bulechek of Iowa City; and Doris Bulechek of King City, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

Chris was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Larry, Paul, and Anthony, and two siblings in infancy.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Chris’s family and her services.
