Ruth (Walsh) Marek, 86, formerly of 1824 Gleason Avenue in Iowa City, died peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa following a brief illness.

Ruth was born July 8, 1918 near Riverside, the daughter of Ivo & Gertrude (Ruth) Bulger. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church & school in Riverside. She married Ralph W. Walsh of Riverside on February 9, 1937 at St. Mary’s Church in Riverside. They resided on a farm near Riverside before moving to Iowa City in 1945 and then moving to Lone Tree in 1969. Ralph died on April 26, 1976.

Ruth worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass for seven years and then for Iowa City Water Service and the City of Iowa City- Treasury Department for 28 years. She retired in July, 1981. Ruth then married Lorence W. Marek on August 22, 1981 at St. Mary’s Church in Riverside. The couple resided on a farm south of Riverside until June of 1989, when they moved to Iowa City. Lorence died March 2, 1992.

Ruth was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside, the South Side Country Club of Riverside, University Club of Iowa City and the Elk’s Country Club of Iowa City.

She is survived by her step-children, Larry & Jan Marek of Riverside; Ron & Ann Marek of Corvallis, Oregon; Kathy & Paul Paulsen of St. Louis, Missouri; and Greg & Marcia Marek of LeMars, Iowa;
Grandma Ruth is survived by 13 step-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren; sisters in law, Judy Bulger & Gwen Bulger; brother in law Ralph Slaughter; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, three sisters, Betty Horak, Erna Slaughter & Mary Marek; three brothers, Leon, John & an infant brother Clair.

Ruth was an individual that immensely enjoyed her friends and relatives and they in return, very much enjoyed her.
