Rev. John P. Boyle, 74, died Thursday, February 23, 2006 at St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville, Illinois.

Fr. Boyle was born August 23, 1931 in Iowa City, the son of Clem and Marie Phillips Boyle. Fr. Boyle was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Iowa City. He was ordained for the Davenport Diocese on December 16, 1956 at the chapel of the North American College in Rome.

Fr. Boyle holds a bachelor degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport and a doctorate in theology from Fordham University in New York.

Fr. Boyle has served on the faculty at St. Ambrose Academy and Assumption High School in Davenport. He was the editor of the Catholic Messenger from 1964-67. In 1972 Fr. Boyle joined the University of Iowa faculty, where he held the Catholic chair of theology in the School of Religion. He served as the director of the School of Religion and taught courses on Catholic Theology and Medical Ethics, until retiring in 2001.

Fr. Boyle held numerous Diocesan offices and was past president for the Catholic Theological Association. He published several works, including a book

Fr. Boyle is survived by two sisters, Marilyn Boyle (Richard) Sargent of Advance, North Carolina and Catherine (John) Martin of Naperville, Illinois; two brothers, Daniel (Donna) Boyle of Iowa City and Richard (Nancy) Boyle of Wheaton, Illinois; twelve nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
