Thomas “Tom” A. Spurgeon, 62, of 1208 Brookwood Drive died Saturday, April 14, 2007 at Mercy Hospital following a heart attack.
Tom was born August 28, 1944 in Iowa City, the son of Walter and Edna Gittins Spurgeon. He was a graduate of City High School, attended Kirkwood Community College and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. On June 18, 1966 Tom
married Jean Ryan at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Nolan Settlement.Tom had been employed in sales with International Harvester in Cedar Rapids, and later
Tulsa, OK. Upon returning from Tulsa in 1980, he was employed at the VA Medical Center for many years, retiring in 2000. Since that time, Tom has enjoyed working in the` facilities department at Hills Bank and Trust Co. Tom loved to care for his yard and those of his neighbors. He was mowing the yard when he had his heart attack.Tom was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Knights of Columbus Marquette Council #842, Regina Boosters, the American Legion, Classic Cruisers Car Club and was
a devoted Hawkeye. He enjoyed the time he spent working with horses at local stables
in his younger years. Tom cherished the time spent with Jean, their children, grandchildren and family.Tom is survived by his wife Jean and their children, Terry Spurgeon, Laura (Shawn “Jack”) Noble and their son Owyn, and Sarah (Tom) Knebel and their children
Alex and McKenzie, all of Iowa City; three sisters, Jean Mahanna of Iowa City,
Virginia “Ginger” Headley of Plano, TX. , Linda (Ron) Parsons of West Burlington;
two brothers, Keith (Carol) Spurgeon of Naples, Florida and Phillip Spurgeon of Iowa City; brother and sister-in-laws, Mary(Tom) Hoyer and Mike (Barb) Ryan of Iowa City,
Dan Ryan and Pat Ryan, both of Solon; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Wallace, his in-laws Mike and Viola Ryan, his brother-in-laws Harold Mahanna and Denny Ryan and sister-in-law
Bernie Spurgeon.
