John D. Oaks, 63, of 4584 Rapid Creek Rd. NE, died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Mercy Hospital of cancer.

John was born October 19, 1943 in Iowa City, the son of Luther and Evelyn Fuhrmeister Oaks. He was a 1961 graduate of City High School, and on November 27, 1965 married Joyce Ellen Watson in Iowa City.

John was a well known area contractor. He owned and operated John Oaks Construction Co. and was the developer of Lyn-Den Heights.

John had a strong work ethic and a wonderful sense of humor. He was respectful of others, honest and cherished his friendships. John loved the outdoors and always cheered on his favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. John liked to garden, bird watch and play bridge or euchre. He will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his two daughters, Gayle (Rob) Clark of Iowa City and their children, Riley, Jacey and John, and Joy (John) Casper of Coralville and her daughter, Whitney Williams; his mother, Evelyn Oaks of Iowa City; six siblings, Jim (Lois) Oaks of West Branch, Larry (Lyn) Oaks and Bob (Suzanne) Oaks, both of Neptune Beach, FL, David (Lorie) Suter of Iowa City, Diane (Randy) Winter of Orlando, FL, and Steve Oaks of Iowa City; his former spouse, Joyce Ellen of Iowa City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his father.
