Raymond E. Campion

Raymond Edward Campion, formerly of 703 North Oak Park Avenue, Oak Park, IL, and previously of Chicago, IL, died on February 17, 2003, in Iowa City, Iowa, where he had resided since December 10, 2002.

Mr. Campion worked for Marshall Field & Company in Chicago for 42 years. He retired from Field's in 1978 as Supervisor of the City Packing Department. Among his responsibilities was managing the wrapping and shipping of thousands of gifts for delivery in time for Christmas each year.

Before joining Field's, he participated in the development of the Skokie Lagoons recreational area as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. During World War II he served in Europe as a Technical Sergeant in the Army Air Force. Mr. Campion was a Past Commander of Melin-Romer Post 728 of the American Legion.

Mr. Campion was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, on February 11, 1914, to Joseph Campion and Katherine Brookhousen. He grew up in the Harrison-Loomis neighborhood on the near WestSide of Chicago, where he attended Notre Dame Academy. He married Wilma Frances Dougherty on November 30, 1946. Mrs. Campion died September 18, 1983. Mr. Campion is also preceded in death by his sisters Isabelle Gardiner and Katherine Sutton, his brother Joseph Campion, and his nephew Gregory Foster.

Mr. Campion is survived by his son, Dan, and Dan's companion, JoAnn Castagna, of Iowa City; his brother Bernard Campion and his wife Josephine and their daughter Diane Maynard, and Diane's son, John; his brother Joshua Edwards and his wife Sandy and their daughters, Lauren and Lesley; his nephew Jim Edwards; his niece Sharon Lignowski, her husband Jack and their children Joe and Laurel; and his niece Beverly and her husband Fred Scott; several cousins; cherished friends and former colleagues; and his dear friend Daisy Weeks.

A private service was held in Iowa City and a family commemoration in Chicago will be held at a later date.

Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made through the University of Illinois Foundation to the Raymond and Wilma Endowed Scholarship at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
