SOLON

Irene G. Costolo, 88, formerly of Iowa City and Coralville, died at the Solon Care Center Tuesday, February 18, 2003, following an extended illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, February 21, 2003, at 10AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Rev. Joseph Van Phung officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 2-8PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30PM and a Parish Vigil Service at 7PM. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society.

Mrs. Costolo was born June 1, 1914, in Solon, the daughter of Adolph and Theresa Ryan Kessler. She married William J. Costolo on September 27, 1939, at St. Mary’s Church in Solon. He died in 1989.

Irene attended Antioch School and Mt. Mercy in Cedar Rapids. In the early years of their marriage, they farmed in the Cosgrove area.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Irene was a gardener, an excellent cook and homemaker. Her family, friends, residents and caregivers at Solon Care Center have expressed how fortunate they have been to know her.

Mrs. Costolo is survived by four daughters, Marti Hendricks and her husband Ron of Solon, Colleen Henderson and her husband Richard of Guttenberg, Milly Swenka of Coralville, and Terri Larson and her husband Hal of Muscatine, one Son, Larry Costolo and Angie Hudson of Iowa City, 15 grandchildren, Kim, Laurie, David, Dawn, Heather, Grace, Lisa, Shelley, Tracy, Tim, Ben, Chad, Scott, Jimmy and Megan, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William, three sons, Robert, James and Stephen, five brothers, two sisters, and one great grandson.
