Albert “Al” C. Schamberger, 82, formerly of Cedar Rapids and a resident of Bickford Cottage, Iowa City died Saturday, May 23, 2009 following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am, Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where friends may call an hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Al was born April 13, 1927 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Russell and Helen Reid Schamberger. Al was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, where he played baseball and pitched on the 1945 Iowa State Championship team. He served in the US Army in Germany and France during World War II, and on January 30, 1949 Al married Margaret Gerber at First Lutheran Church.

Al and his wife were longtime residents of Cedar Rapids, moving to Iowa City in 2006 to be near their son. Al was employed in the sales office at Square D, until his retirement in 1989.

Al liked to bowl, fish and golf. He was an avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. A highlight in his life is 1947 when Al went to spring training with the Chicago White Sox.
Al was a member of the American Legion in Cedar Rapids.

Al his survived by his son, Scott Schamberger of Iowa City; and his brother-in-law,
David (Joan) Gerber of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2008, and brother-in-law Dick Gerber and his wife, Joy.
