Barbara Chadima, 77, of 828 Dearborn Street, Iowa City died Friday, September 12 at University of Iowa Hospital after suddenly suffering an aneurysm.

Barbara Ann (Dytrt) Chadima was born on July 19, 1931 to Joseph and Irene (Kubovec) Dytrt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following her graduation from Wilson High School, Barbara married Wayne F. Chadima of Cedar Rapids. They had three children: JoAnn Irene, Kathryn Lee, and John Michael.

Barbara and Wayne raised their family in Iowa City, where Barbara was an at-home-mom and Wayne worked for Firestone Tire Company and Patterson Dental Supply, before joining the University of Iowa Purchasing Department in 1963. Wayne served as Director of the Purchasing Department from 1976 until their retirement in 1993. Theirs was a successful and loving partnership, as they took great pride in each others many accomplishments.

Barbara Chadima was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family, and to her many friends she brought great joy and happiness through her constant words of encouragement and countless deeds of kindness. Barbara knew no strangers, but only friends she was about to meet. This was never more apparent than during the years that she cared so faithfully for her beloved Wayne during his stay at Lantern Park care facility. She met and touched the lives of many staff and residents through her loving ways, comforting words, and gifts of kindness.

Barbara led a full and active life right up until the day before she passed away, and she truly loved the life she led. She was an accomplished and avid painter who so looked forward to her Wednesday painting class at the Senior Center. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, was an active Pilot Club and Tri-T member, and took great pleasure in meeting friends at Panera’s for coffee and conversation. Barbara was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and for years was active in the Altar and Rosary Society. For many years, she also was a regular volunteer at the Mercy Hospital gift shop.

Barbara Chadima will be greatly missed by her family and friends, especially daughter Joanie Bailey and her husband, Bryan; daughter Kathy and her life partner, Paula Blackard; son John and friend, Donald Black; grandson Chad Bailey, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Ella; grandson Jonathan Bailey, his wife, Angela, and their son, Ethan; brother Lee Dytrt; brother Joseph Dytrt and his wife Catherine; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to St. Anthony’s Bread, the Iowa City Animal Shelter, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
