Cordula A. “Cordy” Guenther, 97, formerly of 305 Westminster Street in Iowa City and Windmill Pointe in Coralville, died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City.

Cordy was born March 8, 1911 in Gleason, Wisconsin, the daughter of Pastor Carl and Alma (Pomrenke) Hesse. She graduated from Lyons High School in Clinton, Iowa and attended Iowa StateTeacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She taught rural school near Waterloo, Iowa for 1 ½ years

Cordy married Walter Guenther on June 12, 1932 in Eldora, Iowa. She was secretary to the Board of Education and School Superintendent for 20 years with the Eldora School System, retiring in 1979.

Cordy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, where she also served as organist for 43 years. She was a past member of the Eldora Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Cecilian’s Women’s Chorus and also taught piano in her home for 25 years. She was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of which she was the first Iowa District East Treasurer.

Cordy was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City from 1980 – present, where she worked with Vacation Bible School and Pioneer School.

Survivors include her children, Ruth Langehough (Paul) of Iowa City, Jean Bossetti (William) of Sandusky, Ohio and Debra Hyland (Michael) of Galena, Illinois; sister, Verona Zappe (Virgil) of Glendora, California; her grandchildren, Robin Ringe, Wendy Gleich (Lee) & their children Cory and Alena, Jill Hampton (Jeffrey) & their children Hannah, Grace and John Wesley, Lori Lasansky (Philip) and their children Emiliano and Diego, Linda Jarnow (Dean) and their children Xander and Lydia, Lisa Andreoli (Thomas) and their children Sarafina, Mia, Gianna and Anthony, Leslie Nall (George) and their children Sophia, Mack, Christopher and Mitchell, Jessica Hyland, Emily Kangogo (Raymond) and Andrew Hyland; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hesse of Pasadena, California and many nieces and nephews.

Cordy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Elton and Armin Hesse, a sister, Paula Hesse and a sister Eldora Close.

Cordy lived her Christian faith and shared that faith with her family. She will be remembered for her love of music, joy of life and youthful spirit. The family gratefully extends appreciation to Amenity Hospice and Legacy Gardens staff for their care and concern for Cordy and her family.

Memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora or a charity of one’s choice.
