Dr. Frederick David Staab, 92, of Walden Place died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at his home following an extended illness.

Visitation will be held from 1to 3pm Saturday, February 14, 2009, Lensing’s Oak Hill, Coralville, where a Funeral Service will be held at 3pm. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Frederick was born December 7, 1916 in Wall Lake, Iowa the son of Victor Staab and Mary (Hanke) Staab. On September 20, 1941 he married Margaret Jo Cretzmeyer in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Margaret Jo died July 4, 2001.

Dr. Staab was a 1939 graduate of the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine. He was a senior staff surgeon at the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Center for over 32 years. He retired in 1986.

Dr. Staab served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and had served as the mayor of University Heights.

He was a humble, wise and compassionate man and a gifted surgeon and teacher who always sought the best care for his patients.

Frederick is survived by his three daughters, Ann Staab DiBerardinis (Jim) of Bozeman, MT, Jane Richardson of Kaunakakai, HI and Mary Lu Callahan (Bill) of Brookhaven, NY; seven grandchildren, Fred Richardson (Kelly), Marcello DiBerardinis (Brooke), Tony DiBerardinis, Ben Callahan, Katie Callahan, Thomas Callahan and William Callahan; two great grandsons, Ilima Kaawa-Richardson and Kamalu Kaawa- Richardson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, four sisters, and two brothers.
