Fred Escher, 90, of 1403 Kenai Court in Coralville, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 in Mercy Hospital’s Hospice Care in Iowa City from cancer.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. Services will be Thursday at 11:00 am at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Pastor David Aanonson officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. The family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Fred was born May 26, 1918 in Parkersburg, Iowa, the son of John and Ida (Rubenow) Escher. Growing up in Waverly, the family later moved to Minnesota. He married Esther Waslick on January 7, 1950 in Austin, Minnesota. Fred worked as a meat cutter for the Armour Meat Packing Plant in Mason City – retiring in 1969. Fred & Esther moved to the Coralville area in 1991.
He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Survivors include his daughters, Terry Escher and Sharon Kopps , both of Coralville; 1 granddaughter, Melissa Freese and her husband Joe; 2 great-granddaughters, Lacey Sheeley and Hannah Freese; 1 great-great granddaughter, Addison Sheeley, 1 brother, Edward Willert of Richland, Minnesota and a son in law, LeRoy Sheeley of Fort Dodge.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther in 2003 and
