John Pershing Hinkel, 90, died Saturday May 9, 2009 at Greenwood Manor in Iowa City following an extended illness. John chose to donate his body to the Deeded Body Program at The University of Iowa. Military graveside services will be held at a later date. Lensing Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City is handling the arrangements.
John was born on November 7, 1918 in Wadena, IA, the son of Oscar and Cora Mae (Voshell) Hinkel. He graduated from Wadena High School in 1936 and went on to serve in The U.S. Army from 1941-1946. After returning from the service, John married Ruth Huse in Waterloo in 1946.
John was a member of the Palo United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the American Legion in Palo and in Waterloo. He was employed by New Era Industries as a tool and dye maker until 1972 and then work for Doerfer’s Engineering until his retirement in 1982.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of 63 years and their children; Tammy (Vernon) Werning, Russell (Barbara), Gary (special friend Pat Herdegen) and Kathleen Pribyl, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Robert Hinkel and two sisters Bernadine Ginter and Betty Pries.
John was preceded in death by a son James, his parents, brothers Donald, Russell, William, Richard, Delmar and sisters Ona Buck and Alo Church.
