Herman Robin, 83

Herman David Robin, 83, of Iowa City, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 4, 2009, following an extended illness. In keeping with the way he lived his life, he passed away surrounded by his loving family precisely at sunset on Saturday evening, the conclusion of the Sabbath.

Funeral services will be held at Agudas Achim Synagogue on Monday, April 6, at 1 p.m. with Rabbi Jeff Portman officiating. Burial will be held immediately afterward at the Agudas Achim Cemetary.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Greta, and three children: Sherry Berlin, Mark Robin, and Paul Robin (Lauren). He is also survived by his sister Jean Rotenberg (David), five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind many friends from every chapter of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Rebecca.

A life-long Iowan, he was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on November 6, 1925. He was selected to serve in a special U.S. army training program at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. Following this program, he was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1948 with a B.A. in Economics. He was a member of Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity. During college he led the Debate Team, developing an oratorical skill he put to use throughout his life in ardent support of his signature blend of traditional values, liberal politics, and University of Iowa sports teams. He was also a 50-year Mason.

In 1949 he married Greta Schlesinger, and they settled in Waterloo, Iowa, where he owned and operated Robin's Surplus for the next 43 years. During this time, he expanded his business, his family, and his ties to the community. He was an active member of many service clubs and Sons of Jacob Synagogue. Following retirement he moved from Waterloo to Iowa City, where he fervently supported the Iowa Hawkeyes in person and in attire.

A devoted parent, grandparent, and great grandparent, he was a tireless supporter and fan of every member of his family. His family cherishes the lengthy trail of letters, cards, and advice he left behind. Even during his final illness, he formed enduring friendships with the members of the medical community that provided invaluable support.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established with the National Kidney Foundation and the University of Iowa Foundation. Donations may be made in Herman Robin's memory through the Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
