Susan Halvorsen, 59

Susan M. Halvorsen, 59, died peacefully in her home Thursday, April 2, 2009 surrounded by family and friends.

A Service to celebrate Susan's Life will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd, Coralville with Revs. Alecia Williams and Harold Schutte officiating. Burial will be at Ridgewood Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UIHC or to the North Liberty United Methodist Church.

Susan was born August 26, 1949 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne and Mary Hochstetler Karr. She was a 1967 graduate of West Branch High School. Susan was married to Robert Halvorsen; they later divorced.

Susan was a senior data programmer at Pearson, where she had been employed since 1969.

Susan was a dedicated and supportive mother who put the needs of her son before her own. She always attended his school and sporting events, and made sure he knew he was loved and cared for. Susan knew the importance of discipline and rules, but always dealt them in a loving manner. She had the gift of good family and friends with whom she loved to go shopping or antiquing. Reading spiritually oriented books and mystery novels were wonderful pastimes, but making her home a place of comfort and refuge for herself and others was important. Susan cherished her friends at North Liberty First United Methodist Church, where she found solace, and also a group that regularly met to exercise.

Susan is survived by her loving son, Brian Halvorsen (Kim Lackender), both of Cedar Rapids; four siblings, Diane (Michael) Prim of Spokane, WA, Danny Karr of West Branch, Brian Karr of Iowa City and Dana (John) Vasquez of Des Moines; and many friends, especially, Sharon, Myrna, Leeann, and Maureen.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mike Karr.
