Services:Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday January 10, 2009 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 2675 E. Washington, Iowa City, IA. A private burial will be held at Illyria Cemetery at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, memorials to Iowa City Hospice.
Visitation:There will be a visitation from 11:00-2:00 Saturday at the church.
Shirley Arlene Schmidt, 74, died Wednesday January 7, 2009 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her family. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday January 10, 2009 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 2675 E. Washington, Iowa City, IA. There will be a visitation from 11:00-2:00 Saturday at the church. A private burial will be held at Illyria Cemetery at a later date. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Arlene Schmidt was born on November 1, 1934 to Ralph R. and E. Leone (Kerr) Shaffer in Wadena, IA. She was baptized and confirmed at the Illyria Community Church. She attended country elementary schools and graduated from Elgin High School in 1952.

On April 17, 1955, Shirley married Richard A. Schmidt, Tripoli, IA at the Illyria Church. They became parents of four children.

Shirley began her employment career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co./AT&T in 1953. She began in Waterloo, IA and throughout the years, was promoted and transferred to Davenport, IA, Cedar Rapids, IA, and West Des Moines, IA. She retired from AT&T as manager of a unit in West Des Moines in 1987 and returned to Elgin to care for her parents. At this time, she began working for Torkelson Motors, Inc. in the office and continued in that position until 1996 when she retired. A year later, she moved to Iowa City, IA to be closer to members of her immediate family.

Her faith and family were the most wonderful parts of her life. After moving to Iowa City, she considered herself very fortunate to be able to help care for some of her grandchildren. This was truly a labor of love. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, on October 3, 1979, her parents, and her sisters, Janice Reinig and Arla Jean Hubbard, her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Survivors include four children: Julie (James) Francis, Lawrence, KS, Tracey Schmidt, Iowa City, Anthony (Nancy) Schmidt, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Nancy (Brian) Cassady, Iowa City; eleven grandchildren: Richard Polk, Stacie Polk, Cara, Joshua, and Emily Kleinmeyer, Aaron, Spencer, Allyson, and Zachary Schmidt, and Ana and Sara Cassady; three step-grandchildren: Cara (Patrick) Lausen, Amanda and Thomas Philipp and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Also surviving is her long time, close friend, Judy Wood, Dothan, AL.
