J. Lowell Whorton, 92

J. Lowell Whorton, known as Jasper to acquaintances and as Lowell to friends and family, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Lantern Park Care Facility in Coralville after a short illness.

There will be no formal funeral service, but there will be a private memorial service in the summer.

Lowell was born on September 25, 1916 in Unionville, Missouri, the son of Jasper Whorton and Margaret Miller Whorton. He graduated from Centerville High School in 1935. He also attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa and he graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, he attended and graduated from Drake University's Law School.

Lowell practiced law in Ottumwa, Iowa for many years. He then went on to do corporate law Belger Cartage in Kansas City, Missouri. He finished his career as a Workman's Compensation Judge for the State of Missouri.

He loved antiques, dogs, bible study, and talking. He was also fond of card games and Chess.

Lowell is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Rick Doran of Iowa City, his grandchildren, Matthew and Amber Doran, sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Norman Christiansen of Fort Collins, Colorado and nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Claudia Isaacson, sister Evelyn Jones and his wife Barbara Louise Whorton.
