Larry Lee Plachy, age 66 of 17 Century Street, Iowa City died Monday, January 27, 2003 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend’s Bob and Chris Lockeby officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his memory to the Larry Plachy Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be sent for Larry’s family through our web site @ www.gayandciha.com.

Larry was born December 18, 1936 in Lincoln, NE, the son of Emil and Louise (Aksamit) Plachy. He served as a corporal in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict. He married Naomi Hunsinger, March 29, 1956. Naomi died in a plane crash July 9, 1978. Larry had forty-two years of service with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He worked as an electrician at various construction sites through out the country, retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed camping and traveling, especially on Amtrak. He always had a helping hand for others. Larry was very fond of animals and had a twelve special years with his dog, “Chauka Lee”. Larry was a member of the United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of the Moose, and the American Legion.

His family includes his companion of eleven years, Helen Kaeser of Iowa City; her six children, Robin Jenks and husband, Leonard of West Liberty, Lori Harpole and her husband, Cary of Belton, TX, William Kaeser and his wife, Jodi of Shawnee, KS, Tracy Schmidt and her husband, Steve of Coeur D’ Alene, ID, Scott Kaeser and Mika Raasch Raasch of Hillsboro, and Becky Hix and her husband, Jared of Iowa City; and eight grandchildren.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Ronnie Plachy.
