Dorothy A. Gingerich, age 81 formerly of Coralville died Friday, January 24, 2003 at the Muscatine Care Center in Muscatine, Iowa from complications of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2003 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to Muscatine Care Center or Hospice Care of V.N.A. in Davenport. Dorothy was born May 28, 1921 in rural Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Emma (Ackerman) Drake. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1939. On August 27, 1939, she married Delbert L. Gingerich in Iowa City. From 1965 until retiring in 1990, Dorothy worked for the City of Coralville in the Water Department. She was a member of V.F.W. Post 3949, Walter Johnson Post 721 of the Coralville American Legion, Eagles Auxiliary, and the Moose Lodge. Dorothy enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing euchre and spending as much time as there was with her family. A more avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and Chicago Cubs fan could not be found.

Her family includes a son and his wife, Jerry L. and Phyllis Gingerich of Chicago, IL; daughter and her husband, Judy A. and Robert M. Smith of Muscatine; four grandchidlren, Randy and his wife, Darla Smith, Sherry and her husband, Keith Miller, Dan Smith and special friend, Shelly Spoltman, and Jessica Gingerich; five great-grandchidlren, Samantha, Alyson, and Ashley Smith, Ryan and Cameron Miller; two sisters, Esther Hemsted Lincoln of Lone Tree, Ia, and Hazel Lamb of Bull Head City, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert in 1980 and brother, Harold Drake, and Don Thompson, a special friend.
