Elaine Gertrude Greenland Lee, age 91, of 1020 S. Scott Blvd in Iowa City, died peacefully at Solon Nursing Care Center on Thursday, January 23, 2003 after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00pm, Monday, January 27, 2003 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. The Reverend Tim Malek will be officiating. There will be a time of fellowship following the services. Additional services will be held Wednesday in Kennewick, WA with burial at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Kennewick. Memorials may be given in Elaine’s name to the Iowa City Hospice or the Tri-City Hospice in Kennewick, WA. Elaine was born on November 24, 1911, in Aneta, ND, the daughter of Olaf Magnus Greenland and Hattie (Saxrud) Greenland. She graduated from Aneta High School in 1929 and Maryville Teachers College in 1931. Elaine taught for two years in a one-room schoolhouse in McHenry, ND and met her future husband, Glenn C. Lee, in May of 1930 on a blind date. Glenn and Elaine married on June 6, 1933. The couple enjoyed life in many cities across the United States; New York, Ohio, North Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Arizona, California, Sand Point Naval Station, ID, Seattle, WA, Pasco, WA, and Kennewick, WA. Elaine played an active role in her husband’s newspaper business where she hosted and organized fundraising and social events. A natural athlete, she was an avid golfer, and a league bowler. She played duplicate bridge and enjoyed participating in the Tri-City Country Club for forty years. Glenn and Elaine retired from the newspaper business in 1980, and then celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1983. In August of 1985 Elaine’s husband Glenn died at home after being diagnosed with cancer.

Mrs. Lee moved to Walden Place Retirement Community in Iowa City in 1997 to be closer to her daughter Penny and her family. She remained active by visiting family and friends, traveling with her cousin Vi, and playing bridge. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Elaine later moved to Legacy Pointe Assisted Living Community, and finally to Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon, Iowa.

Her family includes two daughters; Vicki Campbell and her husband Robert of Seattle, WA, Penny McKean and her husband James of Iowa City; a son; Glenn C. Lee Jr. of Pasco, WA, seven grandchildren; Timothy Moon and his wife Anita, John Moon and his wife Shari, Joseph J. Wilson, Glenn Charles Lee, LeeAnne Campbell, Catherine Campbell Gaul and her husband Aaron, and Meryl Lee McKean; and six great-grandchildren, Alena, David, Monica, Jonathon, Stephanie, and Victoria Moon.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glenn C. Lee, daughter Terry Lee Moon, her brother Maxwell Greenland; her sister Phyllis Greenland Sigstad, and in-laws Virginia Greenland, Marley Sigstad, Howard and Geraldine Lee, Vern and Myrtle Lee Button, Leonard Lee and Stanley Lee.
