Frank E. Kabela, 80, of West Branch died Thursday of injuries from a farm related accident.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Monday, October 20, 2008 at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, 507 E. Orange St, West Branch, with Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Graveside Services with military honors will be Monday at 2 pm at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7 pm at the church in West Branch, where a rosary will be recited at 3 pm and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Services, Iowa City.
Frank was born February 9, 1928 in Iowa City, the son of Leo and Violet Huffman Kabela. He attended school in rural Johnson County and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Frank married Darlene Mougin on February 1, 1954 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove.
Frank farmed in Johnson-Cedar Counties for many years with his sons and cousin, Kenneth. He was a member of St. Bernadette’s Church, Chauncey Butler American Legion Post #514, Cedar County Farm Bureau and a past member of the Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club.
Frank was a gentle man with a strong work ethic. He enjoyed playing cards, and was known to play a mean game of Euchre. Frank’s joy was the time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school events. Frank was a proud supporter of the West Branch Girl’s Softball Team.
Frank is survived by his wife Darlene and their five children, Linda (Steve) Noll of Lisbon, David (Joan) Kabela and Steve (Darcy) Kabela, both of West Branch, Lois (Mike) Coates of Cedar Rapids, and Barbara Kabela of Coralville; 11 grandchildren,
Scott (Maggie) Noll, Stephanie Noll, Sara (Eric) Dye, Erik (Megan) Kabela, Kerri Kabela, Kacie, Kyle, Jacob and Cooper Kabela, Kelsie and Austin Coates; 2 great grandchildren, Katie and Joshua Noll.He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Leila Miller.
