Karen Louise Thielman died at home Sunday, October 5, 2008

Karen was born November 11, 1948 to Harold and LaVerne Kay Thielman in Herman, Minnesota.

Karen was a caring partner, a loving sister, an attentive aunt, and a treasured and thoughtful friend to many. She embraced life to the fullest, knew how to have fun, and found joy in the world around her. She brought her love of life into her work as a Licensed Independent Social Worker. Karen provided hope and courage as a gifted therapist who truly cared for and connected with people in pain and in their life struggles.
She specialized in work with women and men who had been abused. Karen worked at Five County Mental Health in Braham, MN, at the Mid Eastern Iowa Community Mental Health Center, at Gersh, Hartson & Jensen, and at Anderson, Arnold & Partners in Iowa City.

Karen is survived by her partner of 15 years, Kathleen Rash; her sister Nan Shumway (David) of Northfield, MN, her brother David (Janice) of Richfield, MN; niece Andrea
(Shumway) Fritz (Jason), nephews Aaron Shumway, John Thielman and Jason Thielman
(Jennipher); great nieces Eleigh, Kayla and Avery Karen, and great nephew Zachary. Karen is also survived by Kathleen’s sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers Karen asked that memorials be directed to the Crisis Center
of Johnson County and Iowa City Hospice.
