Herbert S. Williams, 92 of Iowa City died Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 29, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Sunday at the funeral home where Masonic Memorial Services will be held at 7pm. Memorial donations can be made in Herb's memory to any of the following, Iowa City Hospice, First Welsh Congregational Church, Lea Williams Hedges Scholarship Fund @ St. Oluf College, Shriners Hospital or the Fellowship Lodge A.F. & A.M. Herb was born August 22, 1916, in Iowa City the son of Carl and Anna (Stevens) Williams. He was a 1934 graduate of City High School. Herb married Betty Leah Puckett on July 9, 1939. They began their marriage on the family farm, a Heritage Farm located on Black Diamond Road, southwest of Iowa City. This marriage spanned a total of sixty-eight years before Betty's death last year on September 9th. Herb was a farmer to the core, living on this farm until the couple "moved to town" in 2004 residing at Melrose Meadows. Following Betty's death he moved to Atrium Village in Hills. In addition to farming, he worked in real estate for a number of years in the Iowa City area.

A man that believed in giving back to the community, Herb was a member of Fellowship Lodge A.F. & A.M, Knights Templer, KAABA Shrine, the Elks and Moose Lodges. Long time member of Farm Bureau, served two terms on the Johnson County Adjustment Board, and was a member of the Iowa City School Board when the site was selected and purchased for West High School.

His family includes sons, Robert Williams and his wife, Peg of Charleston, SC; and Ed Williams of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Nancy Williams of Iowa City; brother, Ray Williams of Iowa City; sister and her husband, Carralee and Jim Sueppel of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Mary Puckett of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Kim Williams and her husband, John; Dana Simcox and her husband, Damian; Leslie Finer and her husband, Tim; A.J. Mize; and Don Hedges; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ben, Sarah and Bekah Williams, McKenna and Brady Simcox; Ashley, Lexie, Riley, and Jack Finer; and Jake and Chelsea Mize; nieces, Diane Sweeney, Shirley Kobat, Nancy Buchanan, and Betty McVey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clyde; and granddaughter, Lea Williams Hedges.
