DEATH CLAIMS MRS. LAURA CATE

Tuesday May 2, 1939

Mrs. Laura Mahana Cate, 84, former resident of Iowa City, died at Clinton, Iowa this morning (04 May 1939) after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Cate was born Laura Dell Mygatt on July 20, 1854. Her parents were Henry R. Mygatt and Elizabeth Purcell, Johnson County pioneers, who resided on a farm near Iowa City. Moving to Iowa City with her family when her father served as City Marshal here, she received her education in the local schools.

The deceased was married in 1873 to Franklin R. Mahana. Three children were born to this union preceded their mother in death.

In 1860 Mrs. Mahana married Benjamin Curry Cate, the two making their home in Council Bluffs and later in Omaha, NE. On her husbands death in 1917, Mrs. Cate returned to Iowa City where she resided until 1936. Since April of that year she had made her home with a cousin, Percival P. Pascal in DeWitt.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the Hohensehuh Mortuary, with burial in Oakland Cemetery (Iowa City, Iowa).
