Ruth M. Switzer of Iowa City died Monday, July 7, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.

Ruth Evink Brown was born October 15, 1926, in Jackson, MI. She graduated from Otsego High School in Otsego, Michigan, having been active in music, drama, and publications. She attended Michigan State College, married and subsequently moved to Iowa in 1946.

Ruth is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City where she taught Sunday School when her children were young. She is past president of the Longfellow School P.T.A. Past Worthy Matron of Jessamine Chapter #135 and past District Instructor of the Order of Golden Rule. She has been an active member of the Mercy Hospital Guild since 1970, serving as President, and in other capacities as a volunteer.

Ruth and Evert E. Switzer were united in marriage in the Methodist Church in Kahoka, Missouri, February 23, 1957, with Everts parents in attendance.

Her family includes her children, Stephen Switzer, Sydney Switzer (Kenneth Seering) and Suzanne (Joel) Erenberger; step-children, Judith (Jerry) Randall and Carolyn Switzer. She is also survived by four grandsons, two sisters, one brother, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Evert (2003) and two brothers.
Ruth’s family expresses their deep appreciation to all the good people at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mercy Hospital who took such good care of her in her last weeks of life. Ruth passed away only minutes apart from her dear and great friend Fern Kobes; they’ve joined their husbands on one last, long fishing trip.
