Tom W. Heitzman age 54 of Hills died on Thursday, January 2, 2003 following a sudden illness at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 6, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills, burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 to 7 pm at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, and one hour before service time at the church in Hills, a general memorial fund has been established in Tom’s name.

Thomas William Heitzman was born on April 21, 1948 in Iowa City the son of Paul and Virginia Kern Heitzman. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Hills and graduated from Regina High School in Iowa City. From 1967 to 1971 he served his county in the Vietnam War as a ground equipment mechanic with the United States Air Force. After his tour of duty ended he returned to Hills and worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City for 31 years. He held the position of Warehouse Supervisor and was scheduled to retire in May. Tom was a life long resident of the Hills area and hand many interests and talents. He loved all sports at the University of Iowa his children remember attending many events with him. He was an avid golfer, talented woodworker, enjoyed playing pool, photography and traveling to warmer climates. His family and friends will miss his warm sincere smile, the twinkle in his eyes and his dry sense of humor. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother and uncle, a patience teacher with a kind heart who easily made friends.

His family includes a special companion and friend Nancy Jean Wilcox of Hills, a set of twins: Scott Heitzman and girlfriend Joy Fillman and Angie Heitzman and boyfriend John Seemeth all of Phoenix, Arizona and the twins mother Mary E. Heitzman of Hills, three brothers: Dick and wife Becky, Bill and wife Nancy all of Hills and Robert Kern of Riverside, one sister Marge and husband Dennis Hamilton of Hills, his step-mother Edna Heitzman of Iowa City; three aunts, Flossie Droll of Hills, Helen Unferth of Silvis, Illinois and Gertrude Beringhele of Las Angeles, California along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

His father on March 28, 2002, his mother on November 25, 1963 and life long friend Bob Jenn preceded him in death. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service’s are caring for Tom’s services and his family.
