Emmalyn R. “Dolly” Vana, age 84 of 907 Dodge Street, Iowa City died Monday, December 30, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of colon cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 2002, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm today at the funeral home.

Dolly was born September 24, 1918 in Iowa City the daughter of Jim and Lena (Kupf) Portwood. She attended rural Oxford and Cosgrove schools. On June 8, 1949, she married Frank J. Vana. For a number of years she worked at the Hotel Jefferson in downtown Iowa City, and for many years, she has cleaned for families in this area, while caring for her husband, son and her parents while they were alive. She and Frank built this home on Dodge street nearly fifty years ago, and they have lived their since. Frank died October 15, 1984.

Her family includes her son and his longtime girlfriend, Jerry Vana and Carole Eldeen of Iowa City; brothers, Walter and his wife, Viola Portwood and Ivan Portwood all of Homestead; and sister and her husband, Helen and Tom Richardson of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, James Portwood.
