Howard B. Moffitt, 90 formerly of 1491 Grand Avenue, Iowa City died at Crestview Health Care Center, West Branch Tuesday, December 10, 2002 following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11AM at Lensing’s Oak Hill Funeral Service, 210 Holiday Road, Iowa City. Father Ed O’Melia will officiate. Burial will be at Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 4-7PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Crestview Nursing and Rehab, West Branch or Meals on Wheels.

Mr. Moffitt was born April 20, 1912 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Jesse P. and Loretta M. Handley Moffitt. He was united in marriage to Margery Fry on May 29, 1934 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Howard graduated from City High School in 1930 and received his B.A.degree in Physical Education from the University of Iowa in 1934. In 1941 he received his M.A. in Physical Education and had also had done graduate work in guidance and counseling. While at the University of Iowa Howard lettered in football and basketball, and was captain of the University basketball team from 1933-34.

He served in the US Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart.

Following graduation he taught and coached at Waukon, Vinton, Fort Madison and Waterloo high schools. From 1946-1954 Howard coached and taught physical education at City High School.He served as Athletic Director. In 1955 he was employed at the University of Iowa in the Financial Aid Office. He retired in 1977 as the Manager of the Financial Aid Department.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Howard is survived by his children, Howard Lee Moffitt of Coralville, Iowa and his daughter, Mary Foraker of Coralville, Iowa and one grandchild, Randi Foraker and her husband, Greg Smith of Rochester, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margery, one sister, Helen Hoag.
