Simeon W. Strauss, 90, of 1851 Melrose Ave., died Monday, December 10, 2002 at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Thursday, December 12 at Agudas Achim Synagogue with Rabbi Jeff Portman officiating. Burial will be at Agudas Achim Cemetery. Arrangements by Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.

Simeon Strauss was born May 24, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Isaac and Belle Rosen Strauss. The family moved to Creston, Iowa where he grew up. He attended the University of Iowa where he met his wife Sara Markowitz. They were married in Chicago in 1937.

He worked for Arvey Corporation in Chicago and became National Sales Manager, prior to moving to Iowa City in 1953. Mr. Strauss became President of Capitol Oil and Propane Gas Co., Inc. until his retirement in 1985.

He was a life member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club, a member of the Iowa Petroleum Marketers Association and the Iowa LP Gas Association. Mr. Strauss served as a member of many civic organizations, notably as a founding member and Chairman of the Iowa City Human Rights Commission. He was a member and served as a three term President of Agudas Achim Synagogue. He was a lifetime member of the U of I Alumni Association and an avid Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Strauss of Iowa City. Three Sons, Stephen and his wife Susan of Iowa City, David and his wife Penny of Cleveland, Ohio and Richard and his wife Ellie of Iowa City, seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Louise.
