Elizabeth A. Kasten-Ultang, 84, formerly of 3500 Lower West Branch Road in Iowa City, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at Liberty Country Living in Iowa City, following complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Elizabeth chose to be cremated. There will be no visitation. Private family services and burial will be held in the Spring of 2003. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Liberty Country Living. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth was born July 2, 1918 in Winnetka, Illinois, the daughter of Lloyd & Margaret (Prescott) Faxon. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka and attended the University of Wisconsin. Elizabeth received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Drake University in Des Moines. She married Carl A. Kasten on October 10, 1940 in Winnetka. She practiced psychotherapy in Des Moines, Iowa at Broadlawns Hospital and in private practice for 30 years. She was actively involved in Drake University functions during the 33-year tenure of her husband Carl, then Drake University Vice-President of Business and Finance. Mr. Kasten died in 1983. Elizabeth retired in 1986.

On August 26, 1986 in Kauai, Hawaii, Elizabeth married Donald T. Ultang. The couple continued to make their home in Des Moines until moving to Iowa City in 1999. Elizabeth received compassionate care and support from Liberty Country Living – a home for family members with Alzheimer’s.

She was devoted to painting and playing the piano. Elizabeth was a supporter of the arts, including the Des Moines Art Center and the Des Moines Symphony. She was a loving mother, wife, friend and counselor and will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the good fortune to know her.

Survivors include her husband Donald T. Ultang of Iowa City, her three children, a son, Fritz Kasten & his wife Anne of Woodside, California, a daughter, Kate Kasten of Iowa City
and a son Sam Kasten & his wife Jane of Stockbridge, MA and two grandchildren, Ani Kasten of Kathmandu, Nepal and Emily Kasten of Stockbridge, MA.

Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
