LeRoy W. “Roy” Axeen, 84, a resident at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville, died there on Sunday, December 8, 2002 following complications of cancer.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Axeen chose to be cremated. A memorial service for both Mr. Axeen, and his wife who died earlier, will be held on Thursday at 1:00PM at Wesley Methodist Church in Mason City, Iowa with Pastor William W. Poland officiating. Burial of both Mr. & Mrs. Axeens‘ cremains will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis on Friday at 11:30AM. The family requests that instead of flowers, memorials be directed to Wesley Methodist Church-Education Program or Church Choir at1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. 50401-5952. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Axeen was born March 20, 1918 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the son of Walter A. & Esther (Benson) Axeen. He was raised in St. Cloud and lived in Mason City from 1948 until 2002. He was a salesman for Sedars Pontiac and Cadillac in Mason City, as well as for B.F. Goodrich. He retired in 1992. LeRoy served in the United States Army during World War II. Roy was involved in the post D-Day assault at Normandy. He then fought in the Northern France campaign, the Ardennes campaign (Battle of the Bulge) and the Rhineland and the Central Europe campaign in Germany. He married Susan Maxine Moser on June 8, 1940 in West Concord, MN. Mrs. Axeen died in 1995.

Roy was very active in all phases in the life of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was very instrumental in the educational program and development, MYF and in the Church outreach programs. He was initiated into the Masonic Order on September 9, 1947 at Caledonia Lodge # 20 Caledonia, Minnesota. After moving to Mason City, Iowa he transferred his membership to Harding Lodge # 649 on March 10, 1954. As an active member of Harding Lodge # 649 he held various offices. He was Past Master in 1976 & 1997 and secretary of the lodge for many years until ill health in 2000 prevented him from being active in the fraternity. He was a member of York Rite-Initiated 1954, White Shrine- Officer “ Past Watchman of the Shepherd”, Eastern Star-initiated 1978 & Worthy Patron 1982, El Kahir Shrine-Cedar Rapids, Iowa and North Iowa Shriner’s Club.

Mr. Axeen is survived by four sons, Dr. David Axeen & his wife Lyssa of Pasadena, California, and their daughters Susan and Sarah; Allan Axeen & his wife Pamela of Coralville, and their children Amanda, Rob and his wife Candy and their children Hailey, Anthony, Caitlin, Kira and Chelsea, Amy and her husband Marty and their children Brittany and Dylan; James Axeen and his wife Jan of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and their sons Matthew and Michael; Steven Axeen & his wife Lynn of Iowa City and their children Kyle, Carrie and her husband Sean and their children Emma and Katherine, Travis and his wife Angie. Also a sister in law, Marie Axeen of Sartelle, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Earl and a sister Dr. Marina Axeen.
