Michael “Mick” Costa, 81, of 319 Court Street Place died at his home Sunday, November 17, 2002 of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, November 21, 2002 at 10:30AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Van Phung officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. The Swing Timers Band will play at the funeral home at 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may directed to Iowa City Hospice or the City High Band.

Mick was born September 15, 1921 in Winber, Pennsylvania, the son of Peter and Anna Micale Costa. He married Helen Jean Slavata on October 22, 1955 at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City.

He was a graduate of Winber High School and had served in the US Navy from 1942-45. Mick was a Naval armed guard on a merchant marine tanker and was wounded in action in the Mediterranean theatre.

He was a member of the Winber, Pennsylvania American Legion and AM Vets.

Mick played with the Glenn Miller band from 1946-47 under the direction of Ray McKinley. He also played with the Corky Cristy band in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Mick recently was playing with a small group called the Swing Timers. They played for senior dining programs in the surrounding area, retirement homes and care centers. Playing his guitar was the great love of Mick’s life and his talent for playing brought much enjoyment to many.

He worked at Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1952 to 1977. Following retirement, Mick worked part time for Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service and Callahan Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter, Susie Thrams and her husband Tom of Iowa City and their son Jamie; one son, Jim Fransen and his wife Patty of Shawnee, Kansas, and their son Dustin; one sister, Clara Norris of Winber, Pennsylvania; and several Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Louie and John, and four sisters, Sally, Annie, Frances and Josephine.
