Benjamin M. “Ben” Novotny, 17, of 4994 400th Street SE in Iowa City, died Friday evening from injuries suffered in an automobile accident east of Iowa City, which also claimed the lives of two of his friends.

A celebration of Ben’s life will be held Wednesday at 1:30 PM at Parkview Evangelical Free Church in Iowa City, with Pastor David Arnold officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to either the West Branch Show Choir, West Branch FFA Program or Parkview Senior High Youth Group.

Ben was born August 25, 1985, at University Hospitals in Iowa City, the son of Martin & Jonie (Brezina) Novotny. He was currently a junior at West Branch High School and worked at Sharpless Auctions. An active member of Parkview Church, Ben was an eight year member of the Christian Youth Group AWANA at Parkview. He was also active in show choir at West Branch High School and Future Farmers of America. He enjoyed ice hockey, country music and playing paintball but above all, he treasured time spent with his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Marty and Jonie of Iowa City; his sister, Brooklyn Novotny of Iowa City; grandparents, Leonard & Ingeborg Brezina of Atkins, Iowa and Janice & Elvin Wear of Iowa City; aunt, Lita Glaspey of Marengo; uncles, Dorrance Brezina of Des Moines and Philip Brezina & his wife Shelley of Belle Plaine; a very special great uncle, Gene Novotny of Long Beach, California; Ben’s faithful black lab, Libby and many cousins, including Jamie & Robert Glaspey.

Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donna Novotny and Leland & Louann Novotny.
