Dr. George S. Anderson, 76 , of 701 Oaknoll Drive died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence of complications related to Alzheimers Disease.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, November 7, 2002, at 11 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Canon Robert Holzhammer and the Rev. Mel Schlachter officiating. Inurnment will be in the Trinity Episcopal Columbarium. The family will greet friends from 4-7PM Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Iowa City or the Alzheimer’s Association of East Central Iowa.

George was born August 23, 1926, in Avoca, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Edna Spaulding Anderson.

He attended school in Avoca, graduating in 1944. Following graduation he joined the Navy and served as a supply officer on a destroyer in the Pacific. Upon discharge he went into pre-medicine first at Notre Dame and then at the University of Iowa. He was accepted into the University of Iowa Medical School in 1947 and graduated in 1951. He interned at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. He returned to Iowa City in July, 1952 and took a three year residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

George married Kathryn Bickel on December 30, 1950.

After completing his residency in 1955, he accepted an offer from Dr. C.E. Schrock to join him in the private practice of internal medicine in Iowa City. He was associated with Mercy Hospital where he served as the President of the Medical staff in 1973-74 and Chief of Medicine in 1967-68 and 1981-82. He practiced for 34 years before retiring in September of 1989.

Dr. Anderson was a caring and compassionate physician who truly loved his patients. Outside of medicine, he had a great interest in agriculture. He owned several farms near Oxford in Hardin Township and took pride in raising Black Angus Cattle.

Besides his passions for farming and medicine his first love was always his family. He deeply valued his time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren.

George is survived by his wife of 52 years Kathryn B. Anderson; four children, Kathryn A. Moscrip and husband Karl of Marion, Iowa, Michael S. Anderson and his wife JoDee of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Susan A. Noble and husband Jeffrey of Akron, Ohio, and Steven C. Anderson and his wife Jennifer of Iowa City; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Fran and Keith Campbell of Oskaloosa. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Katie and Kyle Moscrip, Eric, Jennifer and Megan Anderson, Daniel, Sarah and Matthew Noble, and Jacob and Zachary Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank the staff at Oaknoll Retirement Community and Dr. Nyle Kauffman for the care he received during his extended illness. They would also like to thank Minnette Black Your Right Hand Company for the companionship and support she gave to George and the entire family.
