Catherine LaVella Kern, age 86 of 1638 Wilson Street, Iowa City died at her home Tuesday, October 22, 2002 following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, October 25, 2002 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverends James Vrba and Martin Goetz officiating, Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where a Parish Prayer service will be held at 6pm. A memorial fund has been established in LaVellla’s memory. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services is caring for her family and her services.

She was born April 5, 1916 near Cosgrove, Iowa the daughter of William and Kathryn (Curry) Holland. She graduated from Cosgrove High School. She married Cletus M. Kern in St. Joseph, Missouri. For many years, the couple farmed in the Wellman area before moving to Iowa City in 1969. Here they were members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, for which she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Cletus died March 19, 1993.

Her family includes her son and his wife, Alan and Dee-Dee Kern of Tiffin; her daughters, Linda Sellers and Don Swart of Iowa City, and Cathy Kern of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Mary Kern and her husband Shea Nangle, Jeffrey Huedepohl; Lee Heudepohl and his wife, Heidi; and one great-granddaughter Mikaila Huedepohl; and a sister, Mary Donohue of Solon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Francis, William, and Paul Holland.
