Mrs. Martha Allen

May 30, 1917 - August 13, 2002

Martha Mae “Mickey” Allen, 85, of 415 Brown Street, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at the Crestview Care Center in West Branch following a short illness.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2002, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 123 E. Market Street, Iowa City, with Reverend Karl Divine-Koch officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery on Sunday. Friends may call on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. Memorial donations may be made to KSUI Public Radio, readings for the blind.

Mrs. Allen was born May 30, 1917, in O’Fallon, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Lucille Bugg Schlinger. She was raised and educated in O’Fallon and attended the Illinois State Teacher’s College. She taught in Rockford, Illinois when she met her husband. She was united in marriage to Robert Allen September 9, 1942, in Fort Riley, Kansas. Following his time in the service, they returned to Rockford where they both taught, until moving to Iowa City in 1952. She later worked for Welcome Wagon for 25 years.

She was actively involved in the Iowa City and University of Iowa community for over 50 years. She was a member of Gloria Dei Church, PEO and numerous bridge groups.

Survivors include two daughters, Bev Haigh and her husband Bill of Iowa City and Patty Miller and her husband Bruce of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sons, Robert Allen and his wife Virginia of Sacramento, California, and Terry Allen and his wife Lynn of Ames, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Bev Avrech of Palm Springs, California; ten grandchildren, Kari Rosen, Kristen Rath, Todd Haigh, Kimberly Peltz, Dennis Robert (D.J.) Vokolek, Christopher Allen, Gregory Allen, Angela Mae Allen, Charles Robert Allen and Alexander Gene Allen; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaylee, Emily, Travis, Leah and Morgan.

Her husband and her sister, Alice Barstow, preceded her in death.
