Ross Oliver Beard, age 94 of Oxford, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Amana following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday at the church and after 9am on Saturday until the services at the church. Memorial donations can be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church in Ross’s memory. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services of Oxford is caring for Ross’s family and his services.

Ross was born September 24, 1908 near Oxford, the son of Richard J. and L. Maude (Dunham) Beard. He graduated from Oxford High School. On September 23, 1939, he married Wilma Irene Taylor in Kahoka, Missouri. For a short time, he and Wilma owned and operated B&J Market in Oxford. For many years, he worked with the Secondary Roads Department of Johnson County. Wilma died January 7, 1991.

He was an active member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, IOOF Lodge in Oxford, and later in Iowa City, and Encampment.

His family includes two sons and their wives, Gerry and Roseanne Beard of Iowa City, and Jim and Diane Beard of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jeff and his wife, Tammy Beard, Jeanine Beard, Travis and his wife, Jennifer Beard, and Sean Beard and his fiancé, Julie Goedken; two great-grandchildren, Caitlyn and Drake Beard; a brother and his wife, Richard “Babe” and Bernice “Bunny” Beard of Oxford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Robert “Buck” Beard; and sister, Ruth Clute.

Ross was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a man that loved the out doors, hunting, fishing, and just being outside; and for those that knew him, he loved to play cards.
