Betty A. Brenneman age 78 of Kalona and formerly of Iowa City died on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of a heart attack. Funeral services will be on Monday, October 21, 2002 at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Iowa City, burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials are for the First Baptist Church of Iowa City.

Betty Annette Brenneman was born on July 23, 1924 in Iowa City the daughter of Clifford and Velma Hartsock Smith. She graduated from University High School in Iowa City and attended the Irish Business College. On September 29, 1945, she married Dave Brenneman in Iowa City and for a number of years she worked for the Larew Company before her daughters were born. Betty was a mother and wife raising her daughters, along with being active in her church and community activities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was active with youth groups, and a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader in Iowa City. She was also a member of the Iowa City Women’s Club. Betty enjoyed square dancing, working with ceramics and was an avid Bridge player, but above all else, her family came first. Betty and Dave lived in Iowa City for more than 56 years before moving to Kalona.

Her family includes her husband Dave of Kalona, two daughters: Susan and husband Steve Utter of Tucson, AZ., Amy and husband Bill Butterbaugh and grandson Colton of Williamsburg, five sisters Mary E. and husband Lee Farnsworth of Iowa City, Maxine Meyers of Chicago, Florine Roegler of Iowa City, Velma and husband Bob Fisher of Iowa City and Marjana and husband Pat Lamp of Muscatine, one brother: Clifford “Sonny” Smith of Lone Tree, three brothers in-law: Dan and wife Rose Brenneman of Iowa City, Wally and wife Millie of Joetown and James and wife Eunice Brenneman of Denver, CO. five sister’s in-law: Ada Fisher, Blanche Brenneman, Irene Brenneman, Lois and husband Louis Gugel all of Kalona and Virginia Ryan of Pinckney, MI. along with many nieces and nephews.

Her parents and two sisters Lilly Mae Parrish and Luella Jean Holmes preceded her in death. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Betty’s services and her family.
