Dr. Lewis E. January, age 91, Professor Emeritus College of Medicine, University of Iowa died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of pneumonia.

A gathering of family, friends, and colleges will take place from 4 to 7pm Saturday, October 26, 2002 in the Rotunda of the Levitt Center for University Advancement in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers Dr. January’s family request memorial donations can be made to the University of Iowa Foundation for support of the Division of Cardiology Enrichment or the Department of Dance in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Dr. January’s services and his family.

Lewis Edward January was born November 14, 1910 at Haswell, Colorado, the son of Frank Puleng and Estella Lela (Miller) January. He attended public schools in Haswell, and later graduated from Florence High School, Florence, Colorado in 1929. He received his B.A. Degree from Colorado College in 1933, his M.D.degree from the University of Colorado in 1937, a Sc.D. degree (Honoris Causa) in 1966 from Colorado College, and did postgraduate training in Electrocardiography from the University of Michigan.

Dr. January did his internship and residency at the University of Iowa Hospital from 1937 through 1941, becoming an assistant physician from 1941 until 1942. During World War II he served in the United States Air Force in the medical Corps. Dr. January returned to Iowa City and the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine serving as Assistant Professor of Medicine from 1946 through 1950, Associate Professor of Medicine from 1950 through 1953, Professor of Medicine from 1953 through 1981, becoming Professor Emeritus of Medicine in 1981. He served as director of the Heart Station from 1946 through 1980, Program director of the Cardiovascular Training Program from 1966 through 1981, Associate Chairman for Clinical Programs, Department of Medicine from 1973 through 1981, and Special Assistant to the Chairman, Department of Medicine from 1981 through 1990.

Dr. January was a member of numerous societies and organizations holding offices in most, including President of the American Heart Association 1966-1967, Fellow of the Council of Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association, American Clinical and Climatological Association, American College of Cardiology, International Cardiology Federation, serving as Vice-president from 1970-1978, and International Society and Federation of Cardiology. He has received honors throughout his career including the Gold Heart Award from the American Heart Association, Silver and Gold Award (Distinguished Alumni Award) from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, International Achievement Citation from the American Heart Association, Special Citation for Distinguished Service to International Cardiology from the American Heart Association, Distinguished Achievement Award from the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Iowa; Founder of the University of Iowa-Oxford University (England) Exchange Student Program in 1966, and in 1982 the College of Medicine, University of Iowa established the Lewis E. January Learning Resource Unit.

Dr. January and his wife, Eloise enjoyed the fine arts, and supported many programs through the years. Dr. January was instrumental in bringing the Joffrey Ballet to Iowa City, and so many other Performing Arts Programs to Hancher Auditorium. He served on the Board of Directors for the Foundation of the Joffrey Ballet from 1979 through 1995.

His family includes his wife, Virginia “Eloise” (Taylor) January; two sons and their wives, Alan and Ann January of Indianapolis, IN, and Dr. Craig and Marilyn January of Madison, Wisc. and two granddaughters, Kathleen and Anna.
