Harold Robert Edwards, age 83 of Oxford died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Funeral services with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2002 at the Oxford United Methodist Church with the Reverends Diane Townsley and Harry Imlay officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 pm today at the church. Memorial donations can be made to the Oxford American Legion of Super Sixties Group. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Oxford and Iowa City is caring for Harold’s services and his family.

Harold was born July 3, 1918 in Oxford, Iowa the son of Alvie and Bessie (McCullough) Edwards. He Graduated from Oxford High School. He married Alice Louise Goodrich on August 10, 1937 in Iowa City, nearly sixty-five years of marriage. Harold enlisted in the United States Navy on Marcy 1, 1943 and served in the Seventh Fleet under the direction of “Bull” Halsey on the U.S. Portunas. His tour of duty included the Philippine Islands, New Guinea and Okinawa. He received five battle stars from when his ship was came under attack. Following his service to his country he returned to Oxford where for over twenty-one years he managed Goodrich Produce. He later was employed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for seventeen years retiring in 1984.

Harold was a long time member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, fifty-five year member of the Oxford American Legion and VFW, member of PT Squadron Boats and Tenders, and fifty-five year continuous membership with Frank Vercherka Post 537.

His family includes his wife, Alice; daughters and their husbands, Joan and LeRoy Rourke of Oxford, and Connie and Lynn Colony of Tiffin; son and his wife, Richard and Janis Edwards of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; seven grandchildren, Gatana Stoner, Terry Rourke, Tracy Colony, Chad Colony, Courtney Jensen, Shalon McNear, and Seth Major; ten great-grandchildren, Sonya Stoner, Brannan Stoner, Mariah Rourke, Nile Rourke, Chase Rourke, Keyan McNear, Tyler Jensen, Madeline Jensen, Emily Jensen, and Taylor Colony; and one great great-grandson, Aston Stoner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

Harold was very proud to be a member of the United States Navy. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was well loved and will be missed by his family and friends.”
