William “George” Ellis age 85 of Iowa City, died on Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a stroke. Funeral Services will be on Monday, July 22, 2002 at 1:30 pm at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with entombment at Memory Garden’s Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Macular Degeneration Research and sent to the University of Iowa Foundation, Levitt Center, 1 West Park Rd, Iowa City, Iowa 52240. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for George and his family.

George was born on November 27, 1916 in Johnson County, Iowa the son of Homer and Elizabeth Kindl Ellis. He attended school in Storm Lake, Iowa and married Arlene Garlick in Iowa City in 1943. He worked at Reed’s Garage and later as a registered mechanic at Ford, Lincoln Mercury garage from 1950 to 1979. In 1975, they joined their daughter and son in-law Nancy and Bill Marakos and opened the Towncrest Inn Restaurant, which they ran until they retired in 1982.

His family includes his wife Arlene and children; Richard and Connie Ellis of West Liberty, Judy and Ed Shimkat of Fort Dodge, Gary and Pat Ellis of Cedar Rapids, Nancy and Bill Marakos of Toano, Va., David Ellis of Fresno, Ca., Mark and Robin Ellis of Iowa City, Sandra and Daryle Langenberg of West Branch, 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

His parents and one sister Marie preceded him in death.
